Artists of Ampilatwajta
The Artists of Ampilatwatja is an Aboriginal art centre established in 1999 on Alyawarr Country, approximately 320 kilometres north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Founded by senior women artists, it remains predominantly women-led and operates as an important cultural space where painting is a shared, intergenerational practice grounded in Country and community.
The artists are known for their distinctive visual language that sets them apart within contemporary Aboriginal art. Their works are characterised by a luminous, light-infused palette and finely detailed depictions of bush medicine plants, desert flora, and arid landscapes.
Central to their practice is arreth (strong bush medicine), which features as both subject and cultural knowledge system within the work. Through painting, the artists continue to document and transmit ecological knowledge and lived experience of Country, ensuring the ongoing strength of cultural practices and stories across generations.
