Susan Ruming
Based in the lower Blue Mountains, Susan Ruming finds ongoing inspiration in the landscapes and changing light around her. In her works, land and sea, horizon and atmosphere can become indistinct, inviting the viewer to move between recognition and abstraction and to interpret the landscape through their own experience.
Susan's practice is informed by a longstanding engagement with visual art and design. A graphic designer for more than 30 years, including earlier in her career in the design department of the Art Institute of Chicago, she has maintained an active studio practice alongside her professional design work. This experience has shaped her sensitivity to composition, colour and visual language, while painting provides a more intuitive and contemplative space for exploring her relationship with the environment.
Susan has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the Blue Mountains, Sydney and regional NSW, with her work held in private collections in Australia, the UK, USA and Singapore.
Alongside her studio practice, Susan is actively involved in the local arts community. She has contributed to the Blue Mountains' vibrant artistic community and created opportunities for artists to exhibit their work. She is currently an Artist Educator at Lewers, Penrith Regional Gallery and Manager of the St Columba's Art Prize, roles that reflect her ongoing commitment to supporting artists across the region.
