Our highly anticipated annual release by Fiona Smith features her signature avian characters set within opulent interiors, richly layered with colour and pattern.

Titled Songs of the Desert, the collection features eight new paintings inspired by Fiona’s travels to Morocco late last year.

"The Sahara was a revelation. I am, by nature, quite imperturbable. I am rarely surprised, shocked or “beside myself” with anything. However, in beholding the desert's magnificence and strangeness, I could feel my blood fizz with excitement. 

The colours and culture of Morocco are treasures that have been drawing artists from across the world for almost 150 years."

From the Artist...

My heart began to lift before our minibus even reached the desert. Sitting behind our guide, Adnane, I tapped his shoulder, handed him my phone and asked if he could connect it to the sound system. And so we sped across the flat, arid landscape, wrapped in the glory of Sting’s Desert Rose, his collaboration with the lilting Cheb Mami.

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand.*

‎‎The Sahara, with its undulating vastness, delivered. Laid out before us, beyond a cool green pool, was a broad expanse of hard-packed earth — a kind of forecourt to the dunes. Only a solitary date palm interrupted the view, while two Amazigh guides stood waiting by a well in their robes and turbans for the camel trains of tourists to return.

The Harvest Moon rose, fat and golden, over the pinkening sand. Desert dogs scampered in the half-light and the stars scattered themselves across the sky like tiny diamonds.
